STACS is a constituted, voluntary, self-help group of parents, carers and partners of people with Asperger Syndrome / High Functioning Autism (HFA), which are lifelong conditions on the Autistic Spectrum.
STACS aims to provide support, information and a higher level of knowledge and understanding to parents, carers and partners of adults (16+) with these conditions, who live in Shropshire, Telford and surrounding areas. STACS also aims to help improve the lives of those on the Autistic Spectrum and their carers, by campaigning for better services and provision, awareness-raising and by other means.
STACS was set up in 2006 by a group of parents and carers of adults with Asperger Syndrome, to address the issues they face in their daily lives as part of the caring role.
Support for this group of people and their carers has historically been a largely unmet need; so carers have to live with the constant dilemma: “where will the care come from when we are no longer around”?
In the past, the STACS group was facilitated and funded by The Carers Contact Centre (Telford) and the Community Council of Shropshire (now the Rural Community Council). STACS has been an independent, community group since October 2011, has a constitution, and is seeking funding from a number of sources.
The STACS committee meets every 6 weeks, and AGMs are held annually.
